Introduction
In a significant development for prospective immigrants to Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has recently conducted its first Express Entry round of invitations in over one month. This draw saw 3,200 invitations issued to candidates across various programs, and the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) stood at 531. In this blog, we will delve into the details of this draw, explore the Express Entry system, and discuss recent changes in category-based selection.
The Express Entry System
Express Entry is a sophisticated application management system designed for three of Canada’s primary economic immigration pathways: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. Each of these programs has specific eligibility criteria, but they all rely on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate and rank candidates. This system assigns scores to factors like language ability, age, work experience, occupation, and education, enabling the selection of candidates with the highest CRS scores for invitations to apply for permanent resident status in Canada.
Provincial Nomination Program (PNP) Advantage
Candidates in the Express Entry system who receive a provincial nomination enjoy an added advantage. This is because PNP nominees automatically receive an additional 600 CRS points, significantly enhancing their chances of receiving an ITA. Most Express Entry draws typically have a CRS score requirement ranging from 350 to 550, depending on the specific program or category.
Category-Based Selection
In May 2023, IRCC introduced six new categories for category-based selection Express Entry draws. One of these categories is for candidates with strong French-speaking abilities, while the other five are for those with work experience in high-demand sectors, including healthcare, STEM professions, trades, transport, and agriculture and agri-food.
Since the introduction of these categories, IRCC has been conducting draws for candidates with experience in these specific sectors. Eligible candidates for ITAs through category-based selection must still be part of an Express Entry program, and having a high CRS score remains advantageous, as candidates are ranked against each other.
